Leslie Lamarre, principal of TRG Architects, took a dated bathroom a step up with herringbone details, ambient lighting and a bold entranceway. Set south of California’s Sonoma County, the design plays on a country feel with a walnut vanity and light Calcutta marble countertops.
The poorly contracted vanity lacked storage space and style. “The horrible sconces above the sinks had that Broadway sort of look,” said Lamarre.
Twin walnut cabinets frame the bathroom entrance, which previously sported a door-less stairway and polished marble tiles. “The entry door really made it a functional bathroom,” said Lamarre.
Dated brass fixtures and brown marble darken the shower space. A portable bench fills in for the lack of a shampoo niche.
Calcutta stone covers the shower, accented by a mosaic. A perch adds both interest and a glass herringbone element.
A platform tub with a marble surround and brass fixtures continues the dated look of the previous design. “Everything about it was unappealing,” commented Lamarre.
A sculptural, freestanding tub replaces the former built-in tub and makes the room seem more spacious. “It’s a relatively big space, but it doesn’t look vacant or oversized,” said Lamarre.
