For this new-build home for a downsizing couple, designer Nathan Kyle of Ottawa, Canada-based Astro Design Center planned the home around the open concept kitchen.
Since the kitchen looks directly on the river, the team recalled the nearby outdoors with a large blue island.
The installation of a butcher block, placed at the bar end of the island, avoids the problem of having an obvious seam in the large quartz counters that would be needed to cover the island.
Light gray counters, juxtaposed with crème counters on the island, further highlight the blue cabinetry.
A combination of beadboard paneling and details in the molding bring in a country appeal.
The marble mosaic backsplash ties back into the blue island with its subtle patterning.
Next to the integrated refrigerator, a beverage center and prep space allows for additional counter space and food display.
A mirrored backsplash keeps the river in view and opens up the space.
