A cathedral ceiling and a simple layout paved the way for an Asian kitchen design. “In Asian design, it’s usually about composition rather than each material being an outstanding piece,” said designer Jennifer Gilmer of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and Bath Ltd.. “The space stands out more than the actual materials themselves.”
A 2-½-in.-thick bamboo butcher block adds interest and centers the prep sink in the island. “I try to pay attention to the centerlines,” said Gilmer. “It’s both form and function.”
“The pendants add a little bit of punch and a little color,” said Gilmer. The hood and cooktop are centered with the overhead skylight.
“I liked the hood sort of ending and floating on the wall,” said Gilmer. “I was concerned, but it’s kind of a surprise and goes with the floating breakfast bar.”
To add warmth, walnut cabinetry with simple, flat surfaces and black-honed granite countertops keep the kitchen both contemporary and clean lined.
“We found a beautiful stone ledge tile that brought in all of the cabinetry,” commented Gilmer. “It really is the scarf that finished off the outfit.”
