It should come as no surprise that David Bromstad, host of HGTV's
Color Splash and the winner of the network's original
Design Star, loves all colors. "My philosophy of color is that there are no wrong colors," he said. "People just pair them with the wrong choices. If a client loves a color, I never steer them away from it, but I may have suggestions on how to pair it with other colors." When designing, Bromstad strives to make each room personal and each client—be they on his show or from his own practice—happy. "I just want them to smile," he said. "I want an element of happiness in the rooms that I design."
But before Bromstad can begin to think up creative color combinations, he starts his day by flipping the "on switch" for the most important product in his kitchen—a built-in coffee maker from
Miele [1]. The company's newest model, the
CVA 4000 series, features a touch-screen control panel and fingerprint-resistant Clean Touch steel. It also keeps milk cold for 12 hours. "When you want to make an espresso, it's so convenient," he said. "And if you're a coffee drinker or an espresso lover, this is the thing to have. I'm obsessed with mine."

Bromstad is also obsessed with luxurious bath products, which he believes increase the value of a home. He recommends whirlpool tubs such as those by
Americh [2]. The company's freestanding Velero tub comes with an optional Airbath design, which caresses the body with air bubbles, and Whirlpool system, which features an intense swirling water motion produced by strategically placed low-profile jets. Another great luxury option that Bromstad suggests is
Flextherm's radiant heat flooring system
[3], which evenly distributes warmth throughout the flooring material. "There's nothing worse than waking up on a winter morning and stepping on that cold tile," he said.

When injecting color into the kitchen, the perfect place to start is the
backsplash, Bromstad noted. Among the many tile options available, he prefers mosaics, especially those that boast a striking sheen and an expensive look. "When you put them into a basic kitchen, they give it a lot of life," he said. One of his favorite brands is
Bisazza, which offers the Glass Tiles collection
[4]. Made of glass-chip slab material, the line features intarsia motifs in striped, checkered and geometric compositions that are created by the combination of different colors and materials.

For
kitchen countertops, Bromstad is a big fan of eco-friendly surfaces made from
recycled glass, as well as
CaesarStone's quartz products
[5]. "I have CaesarStone in my house," he said. "Its resistance to wear and tear is awesome. It's stronger than granite. It's very clean and sleek." The quartz countertops come in a variety of colors, including Jerusalem sand, apple martini (green), ruby reflections and champagne limestone. Added Bromstad, "A lot of people want to do color but are really shy about it." Thankfully, HGTV's color expert uses a blend of energy, creativity and dedication to encourage his clients, on the air and off.
