| Design Challenge: |
An 18 ft-long by 4 ft-wide curving island sits in the center of the Kelly residence kitchen, allowing the West wall, with its commanding valley views, to remain unobstructed with floor to ceiling glass. The East wall houses a pantry with an obscure glass exterior wall and doors allowing daylight to filter through. The North wall houses the baking center where the oven and microwave units are unified with the addition of stainless steel drawers to complete a square centerpiece. |

| Project Summary: |
Behind the hills of Stanford University rests this hillside lot. The clients grew fond of this valley viewpoint, and a design would emerge ý one that would entertain the clientsý needs while accentuating the seamless connection to the Valley. Standing within the foyer, the house feels light and airy having an open plan. The principal architectural character is felt through the many apertures of clear glass, allowing the eyesight to stretch outward unencumbered. On approach, a six-foot wide steel and glass bridge provides access to the main entrance, where the hill begins to slip away. Here, the stairwell is poised ý glazed to the outside and open to the inside ý contributing to the sense of connection to the natural world. Tones and textures of interior finishes are delicate and crisp, using light, clear-stained wood paneling and flooring, exposed slate flooring, and frosted glass panels and stainless steel throughout. |
