As part of the Best in American Living Awards (BALA), Professional
Builder has given the Home of the Year award to Carlton Architecture
for the Nethermead residence in North Carolina. The firm also received
the Best in Region distinction, a Gold Award for Best Specialty Room
and two Platinum Awards for Best Kitchen and Best One-of-a-Kind Custom
Home.

The Neathermead residence was chosen for a number of design trends identified by the BALA jury. It features a modern profile tempered by traditional materials; it creates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces; it represents a harmonious marriage of sustainability and architectural design; and its simple geometric forms and uncluttered interiors have widespread appeal for today's homebuyers.
The 4,160-sq.-ft. home has a colonial front elevation, but a more relaxed architecture in the rear, which faces an undeveloped tract. A great-room “pavilion” with windows on three sides flows into an outdoor kitchen and eating area. Locally available materials such as wormy chestnut cabinetry, clear-finished cypress walls and walnut-stained floors give the home warmth and livability. The kitchen appliances include a Dacor range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, while the backsplash features oiled steel panels with cypress wall paneling. The countertops are a combination of brushed absolute black stone and walnut slabs with ebony spline.
