Refrigerators Take Center Stage at Art Show

June 02, 2010

Recycled refrigerators as art? Why not? SRP, a public power utility and one of Arizona's largest water suppliers, has unveiled its multi-month, traveling Fridge-A-Thon art exhibit, which kicked off on June 4 in Phoenix at the After Hours Gallery.

Local artists and celebrities worked with SRP on the Fridge-A-Thon project and have turned more than 15 old refrigerators into pieces of artwork to help spread the message about appliance recycling. The event was designed to raise environmental awareness and point out the negative energy factors related to old, outdated refrigerators. Old refrigerators use far more energy than new ones and can cost their owners more than $100 in additional energy use each year.

SRP’s Fridge-A-Thon, in conjunction with After Hours Gallery, shows that recycling has a fun, playful, creative side and that it can also be rewarding as SRP customers receive $30 and free pickup for every turned-in old, working refrigerator.
