ALNO Pasadena Showroom Goes Green

May 23, 2008

ALNO has opened a 3,000-sq.ft. showroom in Sierra Madre, CA, a small mountain village next to Pasadena. The new location marks ALNO's first entry into Los Angeles' San Gabriel Valley and is the company's first showroom that makes use of passive solar energy to increase energy efficiency.

The showroom is housed on two floors of a spacious, airy loft-style unit. The space features 13-ft. ceilings, open truss construction, steel balconies, hardwood floors and large north-facing windows that look out over the San Gabriel Mountains. "ALNO kitchens are known for their clean, elegant simplicity, and we wanted our showroom to reflect this design philosophy," said Fred Crockett, president of ALNO/Pasdena. "We're proud to have created a space that lives up to the ALNO name."

The Pasadena location also features a variety of environmentally friendly features and design elements to help minimize energy usage. Sawtooth skylights radiate diffused natural light throughout the building and eliminate the need for daytime lighting. The skylights can also be opened to take advantage of mountain thermal air flows, keeping the building cool. A large concrete thermal massing wall runs through the center of the building and helps moderate temperature swings. The showroom also uses low-voltage lighting and low-VOC paints. The location also features ALNO cabinets, which are manufactured with zero emissions and zero carbon footprint manufacturing, throughout the building.

"I didn't really know too much about green building before starting this project," said Crockett, who has been a general contractor for more than 30 years. "However, you go back and forth to see what works and what doesn't. In the end it was a huge success. We have been doing numerous projects since opening, and I think the fact that we built our own green space, from which to sell a truly green product, has something to do with that." Crockett mentions that he paid an extra $12 per sq. ft. to complete this project. However his monthly energy bill hovers at a modest $150 per month.
