Minnesota Kitchen Wins Master Design Award

October 05, 2010

Orfield Design & Construction, based in Minnesota has won a silver award in the “Kitchens Under $50,000” category in the 32nd Annual Qualified Remodeler Master Design Awards Contest.

Sponsored by Qualified Remodeler magazine, the Master Design Awards is a national contest recognizing outstanding achievement in residential remodeling projects in 22 categories. Nominees are residential remodeling companies from across the country and entries are judged on aesthetic appeal, construction techniques used, financial value of the project, functionality of space and overall impression of the project.  Awards are determined by a panel of five expert judges.

Orfield Design & Construction took a 1960s kitchen (see above image) with stained flush oak cabinets and trim, vinyl floor tiles and Formica countertops, and gave it an updated look with more countertop prep/working space, open display areas, better lighting and additional cabinet storage space. The homeowners, a retired couple, had specific project guidelines including staying within the confines of the existing kitchen walls, keeping the windows in the same location, using their favorite colors and incorporating a handmade oak bookcase and matching oak trestle table.

The final renovation resulted in a brighter, more welcoming space. Corian blue crush countertops were used on all surfaces with a Corian glacier white integrated sink, which was paired with a Kohler BN Forte two-hole faucet and side spray. New white appliances including a Kenmore bottom-freezer refrigerator, a Kenmore Elite wall oven, a Frigidaire over the range microwave/hood combination, and an Electrolux induction hybrid cooktop were specified. To make the space inviting, pale yellow painted cabinetry, white gloss field tiles, and colorful border tiles finished off the look.
