October 10, 2013
At a recent press event and exhibition opening at the New York Center for Architecture, Cosentino announced the global launch of its new Dekton surfacing product, as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art factory at the company’s manufacturing headquarters in Spain. According to the Cosentino, Dekton is the most significant new product launch since the development of Silestone natural quartz in the early 1990s, and the company has invested $172 million and 22,000 hours of research and development in its creation.

Dekton is an ultra-compact architectural surface that can be used in both interior and exterior design. It is a mixture of inorganic raw materials found in glass, porcelain tile and natural quartz and has resulted in what the company deems a proprietary new advancement called Particle Sintering Technology, which was developed by Cosentino’s R&D team. The product is highly impact, scratch and abrasion resistant, so it is suitable for use in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms as a countertop or flooring material.
Architecture in Formation’s contribution to the Surface Innovation Exhibit
The exhibition – Surface Innovation: Redefining the Boundaries of Interior and Exterior Spaces –illustrates the hard work that went into developing the new product. Through the design concepts of six New York architectural firms, including Architecture in Formation, Desai/Chia Architecture, Easton+Combs, Manifold ArchitectureStudio, Moorhead & Moorhead and Softlab, the new Dekton material’s properties and uses are illustrated. Architect Daniel Libeskind also announced at the event that he is working with the Dekton material to create Beyond the Wall – a permanent sculpture at the company’s global headquarters that will be unveiled in November.
