Southern Living’s Best Kitchen Design Award went to Good Architecture in Annapolis, Md.

Southern Living recently hosted a cocktail reception to honor the winners of its 2013 Home Awards, which celebrate the best in Southern architecture and design. The event was held at the Swan House Restaurant in Atlanta and was hosted by the magazine’s editor, Lindsay Bierman. 

Five winners were announced during the event, and their projects are featured in the August issue, which is on newsstands now. A panel of editors from Southern Living, as well as Betty Dowling, Professor Emerita at the Georgia Tech College of Architecture chose the winners based on inspiration, achievability and authenticity.

This year’s winners include: 

BEST KITCHEN DESIGN: Wayne Good, Annapolis, Md.

Wayne Good of Good Architecture, P.C., in Annapolis, Md. designed this kitchen in just over 150 square feet after a hurricane flooded his 110-year-old Chesapeake Bay cottage. He moved the location of the kitchen to face the water and expanded upward with a vaulted ceiling to create more space. 

WINNER: BEST NEW HOME: Bill Ingram, Birmingham, Ala.

This year’s best new home is in Lake Martin, Ala., and displays a refined craft and relaxed charm, as well as old-house soul and modern touches. The architect paid close attention to detail and created a complementary connection between outdoor and indoor elements.

WINNER: BEST EXTERIOR MAKEOVER: Georgia-based Historical Concepts

The winning home is in Hobe Sound, Fla., and features Chinoiserie trim, a latticed entry and hardworking windows.

WINNER: BEST-PLANNED COMMUNITY: Beaufort, S.C. 

A team of architects, builders and developers transformed a two-block stretch in Beaufort’s historic district with smart planning and support from the city. The teams include Allison Ramsey Architects, Community Development Corporation of Beaufort, LLC, and Allen Patterson Residential.  

HAYS TOWN AWARD: Norman Askins

Hays Town won this first-ever award and is honored for designing more than 500 homes in Louisiana and across the South since 1977 and keeping up the art of tradition.
