New York--Gregore Morin of Gregore Joailliers has been named the winner of the American Jewelry Design Council (AJDC)'s 2010 New Talent Contest.

An annual event produced in coordination with the JA New York Summer Show, the contest exposes a single outstanding designer to national and international buyers as part of the AJDC's mission of elevating the caliber of jewelry design and challenging professional designers to actualize their creative potential.

Selected from a talented pool of applicants, Morin was chosen for his originality and innovative abilities as well as the marketability and cohesiveness of his designs, the AJDC said in a media release.

A multi-award winner, Morin has scooped up six American Gem Trade Association Spectrum awards, among others, and his work can be found in museums and private collections alike.

Originally from Canada, Morin worked as a jeweler's apprentice before joining Santa Barbara Calif.'s Silverhorn Jewelers, where he studied under Christoph Kraehenmann and Stephen Webster, learning traditional techniques and forming his own signature style.

Morin's designs include a menagerie of whimsical gemstone and diamond-studded pieces created from very fine materials and from an extraordinary level of craftsmanship, including the meticulous selection of stones. Among his designs are a black diamond cat with pink opal nose, a geisha pin featuring onyx tresses and a fan of colored sapphires, and a frog crafted from opal cabochons with a winking pink sapphire eye.

On Monday, July 26 at 3 p.m., the AJDC plans to celebrate Morin in the New Designer Gallery at the JA New York Show, where he will be exhibiting for the first time.

The AJDC has also recognized a handful of designers with honorable mention nods. The designers include: Chris Ploof, Danielle Miller-Gillam, Erik Stewart, Jennifer Rabe Morin, Joshua Javaheri and Julia Behrends.
