While family plays an integral role in many a kitchen remodel, its impact on this honorable-mention-worthy design by Jenny Derry was deeper than on most. In addition to providing the homeowners with all the modern amenities to indulge their love of cooking and entertaining, the new 289-sq.-ft. kitchen pays respect to their grandfather who, noted Derry, built the home in 1933 “with his own hands.”

To accommodate the clients’ wish list, which included a new gourmet range, a large built-in refrigerator and a generous island, Derry added square footage by removing an interior window, a fireplace and a wall that separated the small, dark existing kitchen from the family room. In
doing so, the contractor uncovered wooden forms, hand carved by the grandfather, which then served as a template for a new arch. The forms
“are a beautiful custom touch,” she said, “and a nod to the hard work of the clients’ grandfather.”

White beadboard cabinetry and dentil crown molding evoke the home’s historic architecture, as do classic-style door pulls and a prep faucet. Pale
green walls, a black glass and granite backsplash and a black countertop put a fresh spin on an otherwise period-inspired black-and-white color scheme, while a variety of drawers, cabinets and a pantry ensure plenty of storage. Light-filled and open, this inviting kitchen embraces family in more ways than one.
