When it came time for David Stimmel, of Stimmel Consulting Group, Inc., to create a kitchen for his very own home, a few discarded pieces of
mahogany became the catalyst for the entire design. By “setting them on edge and joining them in an offset pattern,” explained Stimmel, a woven
feel emerged that spoke to the designer and his fiber artist wife.

Used throughout the 25-ft. x 16-ft. kitchen (on drawer fronts, the ventilation hood and the face of the peninsula seating area next to the
cooktop), the patent-pending pattern established an offset theme, which was carried out in other areas of the space: in particular, the “unusual overhangs” and finger-jointed details in the pantry doors and as an accent in the wall cabinetry adjacent to the main sink. It also provided architectural interest in a home “devoid of such detail,” said Stimmel.

Additional charm is created from an eclectic choice of materials, which are used throughout the kitchen, but all come together in the island. In
addition to the dark mahogany weave detailing, Stimmel incorporated antiqued copper panels, a custom concrete sink, gold granite and mahogany cabinetry. Elsewhere, the copper panels are used as toekicks and decorative accents, while the gold granite tops the base cabinetry
on the main sink wall and the peninsula seating area.

In keeping with his desire to keep cost and material use low, Stimmel was able to reuse multiple appliances, including a pair of ovens and a
steamer (installed in the island), a refrigerator, a dishwasher drawer, a beverage refrigerator and a warming drawer—all job-site finds over
the course of his career. Even the exterior door units and several windows were reused from other parts of the home.

Last but certainly not least, the couple’s two children were a major consideration in the kitchen’s design. In addition to their very own
cabinet in the island, the low-elevation peninsula provides a place for activities—and can double as a buffet for entertaining—and the floor
space near the entrance to the yard is oversized to allow room for a play table, “perfect for morning tea parties!” said Stimmel.
