Seeing is believing – or so feels Jonas Carnemark, who decided to relocate his downtown Bethesda, Md. showroom KONST SieMatic in favor of a larger, more visible space. Founder of design firm CARNEMARK, the Swedish born entrepreneur didn’t have to go far to find a new location. Both businesses were ultimately transitioned to a LEED-certified building just down the street.

“At first it seemed like too much space, but the opportunity was too good to pass up,” explained Carnemark. “Someone else might have put 10 displays in there, but we only have three.”

Seamless Spaces 
The SieMatic showroom includes three display areas, dubbed URBAN (display one), PURE (display two), and CLASSIC (display three). Though each is separated by a Danish mesh-like carbonate, the areas blend together seamlessly with decorative elements and SieMatic branded cabinetry.

“It’s not overly adorned,” said Carnemark. “There’s a deliberate lack of arbitrary décor. We instead chose to emphasize clean lines with a varying degree of luxurious finishes.”


Surfaces and 11-ft.-tall ceilings feature inset LED lighting that includes downlights, adjustable recessed lighting and pendant fixtures that Carnemark said, “sort of sparkle when you enter the space.” Contiguous, weathered and oak-like luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring engenders an additional sense of connectivity throughout the large room, where the architecture causes the cabinetry to appear recessed. 

“It is sort of built into wall niches,” he added. “It makes the space feel very big because there are no jutting masses. They are all built into the wall.”

Unlike many showrooms that display an abundance of products, KONST SieMatic instead took a more holistic approach that attempts to present a complete kitchen idea. Each of the displays is also themed by style rather than cabinetry type.



Savvy Subdivision
URBAN (display one) features a 10-ft.-tall, walnut wall that is actually disguised cabinetry bearing a hidden refrigerator, two ovens, a recessed TV and adjacent shelving. Carnemark chose to juxtapose natural wood paneling with a Lotus white, matte-lacquered island topped in matching Caesarstone and dark oak wood that cantilevers off of it for a monolithic appeal. Three modern, bar-height stools provide seating.

PURE (display two) is a “working kitchen” with functioning, interactive appliances. The display features high-gloss, dark graphite cabinetry complemented by light European oak and countertops clad in a durable, basalt-like ceramic that is uncommon in the U.S. Meanwhile, the island houses three drawer banks measuring 18, 24 and 30 inches deep. This variety helps patrons understand the functionality of each depth in a realistic setting. 



CLASSIC (display three) is a more traditional kitchen area with a prominent flat panel door system comprised of chrome and glass cabinetry. The panels’ brushed stainless finish is offset by a gloss nickel bevel that Carnemark said is “sort of like a little jewel box with a large hood above.” The use of quartz for the backsplash and countertops adds an additional sheen to the space, which features floating stone pocket doors that access built-in, adjustable shelving.

“There’s a very clean aesthetic throughout the whole showroom that I very much enjoy,” said Carnemark. “I wanted this clean, serene, European feeling as you come in that is very understated. That’s my favorite part.”
