Once a dark, forgotten room in a century-old villa, this bathroom design was inspired by the Chinese Zodiac in which it was designed: the Year of the Monkey Designers Shelley Cahan of San Francisco-based Shelley & Co. Interior Design and Dina Bandman of San Francisco-based Dina Bandman Interiors found that using this Zodiac as their muse instilled both luxury and playfulness into their small space.
“Every element of the Year of the Monkey bathroom was curated to delight the senses – from the Art Deco marble floor, to the hand-painted ceiling, to the Lucian Freud painting hanging above the toilet and the whimsical accessories on display,” said Cahan.
Since this bathroom was designed for the San Francisco Decorator’s Showcase, the impractical light fixture in the shower is meant to be purely fun and representative of the water coming down from the showerhead.
Each monkey on the wallpaper is individually painted and has a different facial expression.
“For the light fixtures flanking the mirror, we chose Urban Electric’s Tilt sconces because we loved the added dimension they brought to this space,” said the design duo. “The juxtaposition was meant to be modern atop a traditional backdrop of ornate wallcoverings.”
Mirrored tiled walls were installed to add depth and light to what was otherwise a small, dark room.
