Two clients came to designer Kimberly Kerl of Greer, S.C.-based Kustom Home Design with a unique challenge: convert an existing formal living room and office into a master suite.
A portion of the living room became the master bedroom, and the rest of the living space became a walk-in closet and a hall leading to the master bath, which was once the office. The new office was moved into the former sunroom.
Since the original laundry room was in the basement, the designer created a secondary laundry space in the master to make it more accessible to the homeowners. The stacked laundry appliances allow for easy of use and minimal bending.
“We designed symmetrical vanities with a shallow center tower to provide ample storage,” said Kerl. “The his-and-hers vanity design works well in this shared bathroom space.”
Dual showerheads, easy-to-reach controls and a shower niche offer luxurious touches for an ideal master shower.
“My favorite part of this design is that when people come to visit the home, they have no idea that the master suite was an adaptive reuse of an existing living room and study,” said the designer. “The design works perfectly for the homeowners and provides them the flexibility of living in a large home with an intimate feel.”
