Designer Patricia Davis Brown of Vero Beach, Fla.-based Patricia Davis Brown Designs needed to transform a gloomy master bath into a tranquil room for her client to age in place.
The previous bathroom was dingy and lacked privacy with the shower located in front of a window. The toilet area was tight, and the grab bars were installed at dysfunctional angles.
The designers added layers of light – general, task and ambient – all controlled by switches and dimmers in different zones the user can adjust to her comfort and safety levels.
“When people are designing for an aging consumer who is fully capable, there is no point for grab bars right now – that is just depressing,” said Brown, who added backing in the wall so those can be added in the future.
The half wall separating the shower and toilet areas adds privacy to each without visually reducing the bathroom size and allows natural light to travel freely throughout the space.
The widespread, high-arc faucet features lever handles that are easy to grasp and meet ADA compliances. It also has an adjustable safety stop to prevent accidental scalding.
