Earth-Friendly Kitchen and Bath Renovation
In this earth-friendly kitchen remodel, designer Goli Karimi of Home Front Build reused all the appliances with the exception of a new double wall oven. The former closed-off kitchen now opens to the rest of the living spaces on the first floor, which allows for ample light to brighten things up.
“Our company owner has been serious about sustainable design for many years, so we educate our clients on the importance of green products and introduce them to all the options available to them,” said the designer. “We incorporate as much as we can within their budget.”
The clients’ existing cherry wood cabinet was repurposed as a built-in base cabinet in the pantry area. A wood-framed backsplash that speaks to Craftsman and Spanish styles and glass upper cabinets highlight their pottery and dishes.
For those products that were new – such as the backsplash in the earth-friendly kitchen – the designer specified brands made in the U.S., as well as low- or no-VOC finishes for floors, paint and cabinet interiors.
The shower tile in the pool/powder bath is recycled, and the designer reused the mirror and sink from previous bathrooms. She specified LED sconces in the new space and was able to reuse a ceiling-mounted light fixture from the former bathroom in the new pantry. According to the designer, the Icera toilet uses 1.28 gpf, and the brand is one of the earliest to partner with the EPA’s WaterSense program. The green and earth tones coordinate with the adjacent living space and create a relaxing, spa-like environment.
