Reimagining Bathrooms
Unbuilt Honorable Mention
“The project consists of a very small bathroom in a high-rise condominium within steps of a marina, but it has no window or source of natural light. I chose to reference the nearby sea with a modern design influenced with a nautical yet sophisticated feel. To accomplish this goal, the vanity is cantilevered from the side, lifting it off the floor to create an effect of floating and lightness.” – Carmine Scotch, District 2 Design, Long Beach, Calif.

“The top surface of the vanity highlights the washbasin with a two-in.-thick acrylic surface illuminated from below. Behind the Cape Cod washbasin is a blue penny tile wall, which brings the eye up to the ceiling where a light soffit hints at light from the sky. Floating above the wall is the Cape Cod Mirror with an illuminated edge, which ties all elements together in a sharp yet beautiful focal point.” – Carmine Scotch, District 2 Design, Long Beach, Calif.

“The project is a decent-sized bathroom with poorly laid out points of entry. By removing the second door and using the resulting space as storage, we have opened up the feeling of the bathroom. This allowed for the first entry point to be widened, thus making the space feel more spacious.” – Alexander and Audrey Worden, Studio TJOA, Erie, Colo.

“Due to the width of the room, the addition of a bathtub would have required one of the bathroom walls be moved; unfortunately this was not possible. Instead of a bathtub we decided to use a Duravit shower pan for the remodel.” – Alexander and Audrey Worden, Studio TJOA, Erie, Colo.

In this complete renovation of a small, 19th-century-dated bathroom, the designers were challenged to rethink the layout so that it still feels spacious while providing storage, towel and clothing racks. Studio Habeas Corpus, Boston

“This bathroom remodel was a gut renovation of an existing 1960s bathroom in a mid-century modern home. The owners wanted to upgrade to modern fixtures with authentic natural finishes, such as cleft-finish slate walls and a Cararra marble floor. The Duravit fixtures and the walnut vanity complemented the design perfectly, creating a spa-like setting.” – Robert Jamieson, STUDIOrobert jamieson, Devon, Penn.

“The existing layout felt somewhat messy and cramped; therefore, the objective was to bring a sense of openness, clarity and warmth. The new layout creates two distinct axes with Duravit products as the focal points.” – designer Mark Mangapora, Fenton, Mich.
