This outdated bath contrasted sharply with the owner’s taste, which was for a contemporary, spa-like feel. To keep the budget low, designer Catherine Schmidt of Chemack Construction kept all of the plumbing in place and yet created a completely different design.
The ebony-stained maple vanity, done in a Shaker style, marries the modern dark palette with a more traditional cabinet style. A mosaic of glass tile and natural stone brings in the spa-like appeal.
The previous design had room to spare, giving Schmidt the opportunity to expand both the shower and tub.
Redone in the same material as the cabinetry, the tub boasts a new soaking mount, updated fixtures and the same mosaic tile around the perimeter. The shower continues the dark palette with porcelain tile and a strip of the mosaic.
The finishing touch was closing off the toilet to create a private water closet.
“Typically water closets are so boring, and this just doesn’t feel like that,” said Schmidt. “This just adds a nice detail to the whole design.”
