In her open-plan kitchen design, Erin Fry of Cre8 Cabinetry Designs annexed a hallway and an adjoining room to double the space of the kitchen without expanding the footprint of the house.
To get the most bang for her clients’ buck, Fry specified a mix of price points in the design. Splurging on high-end light fixtures and a custom ventilation hood by Woodharbor was balanced with budget-friendly stock cabinets from Fabuwood Cabinetry and better-quality appliances from GE Cafe.
The original intrusive dog-leg work peninsula was removed and replaced with an expansive island that doubles as seating and storage. It also organizes the way people move through the space – a prime concern when there are young children in the household.
The white and neutral hues used for the cabinets and countertops form a timeless background that will support accessorizing the space with changing color fads. The Taj Mahal quartzite countertops were another creative cost-conscious solution. To achieve the distinctive profile, two slabs with different edge treatments were stacked together, saving the expense of full custom fabrication.
