Designer Jessica McClendon of Glamour Nest Interior Design in Fort Worth, Texas, was tasked with creating a high-functioning kitchen and children’s bathroom for a single mom with four kids while sticking to a strict budget.
After opening up the kitchen to the family room, there was plenty of square footage to incorporate a large island with workspace for both cooking and facilitating homework.
To save on costs, the original perimeter cabinets were kept and repainted white, and the existing appliances stayed. The marble countertops were purchased in bulk for the project – some slabs were used in the bathroom as well – to stay on budget.
“The client wanted some bold choices, but she wanted those choices to be classic and somewhat timeless,” said McClendon. “We went for a bold black island. There is nothing more timeless than black!”
The children’s main bathroom was meant to be shared by three boys, so McClendon needed to look at how to best streamline bath time. By removing an unused linen closet, she could expand the bathroom and incorporate a larger shower and a tub so all three children could bath simultaneously.
The walls were lined with white tile halfway up, and the floors were done in a smaller, hexagon-shaped white tile to help prevent slipping because of the limited surface area. The white tile makes cleaning up easy, while the fun and subtle dog-patterned wallpaper adds a touch of character to the space.
