This formerly outdated and closed off kitchen became an open and modern space after designer Michael Winn of Falls Church, Va.-based Winn Design + Build worked hand-in-hand with originally hesitant clients.
“Three walls couldn’t be moved because of what was on the other side, and one was ‘off-limits,’” said Winn. “The solution was to lobby for the removal of the one wall between the kitchen and dining room – that wouldn’t trigger a ballooning of the scope/budget – to use light-colored cabinets and to install a large patio door to maximize light.”
The monolithic white color scheme in this space – contrasted by the natural stone backsplash, black hardware and faucet – helps brighten the smaller kitchen.
“I really love the range wall,” said Winn. “The natural stone slab backsplash provides a little needed texture and visual interest to the space.”
The island provides functional seating for guests and family members while the clients are cooking.
The hall bath – which also serves as a guest bathroom and the bathroom the clients’ son uses – needed a functional upgrade that complemented the nearby kitchen.
The combination of white and gray, including the standout three-dimensional tile in the shower, makes the bathroom feel modern with a touch of personality.
