Design Professionals to Watch
First Place Transitional Kitchen Winner
“Our goal for this project was to create an interior that reflected our client’s way of life, how they interacted with their family and [how they] entertain. It is also in keeping with the heritage nature of the existing home.”
-Miriam Fanning of South Yarra, Australia-based Mim Design
First Place Traditional Kitchen
“Our goal was to restore the 1904 Tudor to make it more livable for a modern family but do it in a way that was true to the spirit of the home and the homeowner’s cherished memories.”
David Heide, with Chris Christofferson and Mark Nelson, of Minneapolis-based David Heide Design Studio
Second Place Contemporary Kitchen Winner
“The available space for the kitchen was very long and narrow. To respond to this constraint, we organized the workstations into two islands, one for wash-up and food preparation and one for cooking. The materials selection for both islands reflected their respective functions. We worked with materials selected for their warmth and durability, which in turn were expressed to create harmonious compositions.”

Small Spaces Kitchen Award Winner
“Our biggest challenge was negotiating countertop and storage space within a compact urban footprint, while maintaining a simple flow and open design filled with natural light. By positioning the kitchen in an alcove-type space, making the kitchen part of the adjacent living/dining area also became a challenge. Transitioning between the kitchen and the open space was achieved by extending millwork from one type of space to the other and by blurring the boundary between them. “
Idan Naor, with Shuji Suzumori, of Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Naor Suzumori Architecture D.P.C.
Second Place Transitional Kitchen
“This 6,500–sq.-ft. house was designed for a family with a rich tradition of multigenerational living. While creating beauty and luxury throughout was the overarching goal, paramount was ensuring that we understood every possible need of this family’s daily domestic life and structured the flow and design of the home to respond to them in thoughtful ways.”
David Armour, with Scott Schneider, of San Francisco-based David Armour Architecture
Outdoor Kitchen Award
“We wanted the barbecue to take on a very natural connection with the indoor kitchen. In Belize, the indoor/outdoor living experience is all year long.”
Scott Gjesdahl, with Sandra Gjesdahl, of Belize City, Belize-based Ja’Qor Properties
First Time Entry Award Winner
“The apartment and kitchen were designed for clients who have downsized from a large family home but wanted to maintain their ability to entertain and cook for family and friends within a significantly smaller footprint. The clients required a degree of formality for the kitchen but also sought something novel, flexible and open to the surrounding harbor views.”
