Designer Barbara Preston of Coles Kitchen and Bath Design Center in San Diego was charged with turning a 7-ft. by 7-ft. space into a traditional white kitchen design. The original space was tiny – only 7 feet by 7 feet – and state restrictions during the pandemic put several kinks in the original plan of action.
A white palette was a big part of this project, where the clients wanted this classic look but hoped Preston could bring in some updated elements to keep it fresh. The biggest changes included removing one long wall that divided the dining room and the kitchen, as well as a shorter, awkward wall with no purpose. The result is a much larger kitchen, with plenty of room for the island the clients wanted.
After taking down two walls, there was plenty of room for a long island with a second oven and seating in this kitchen design.
“The backsplash was a gorgeous splurge,” said the designer. “We used Dolomite white-tumbled marble and took it to the ceiling behind the sink and hood.”
The clients originally had their hearts set on a white quartz countertop. After visiting a slab yard however, they decided they preferred the organic feel of quartzite for their white kitchen design.
“My favorite part of this project was the clients,” said Preston. “They were happy and positive coming in, during the install and even happier afterward about their space.”
