Designer Amber Carfield of Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Kitchens by Good Guys faced the challenge of turning a restricted space into a modern kitchen – and with a limited budget.
One of the main layout issues was the wood-burning fireplace, which could not be removed because of budget constrictions. The design team instead took out the built-in bar so that the fireplace could become the focal point for that area and installed a small ethanol-fuel insert so the homeowners could more easily enjoy the fire feature.
“Not only will it be the usual prep area and clean-up zone, but this kitchen offers a great space for the family to congregate and enjoy a meal together,” said Carfield.
The bar was relocated to the kitchen space to make it more accessible, as well as allowing for overflow storage for kitchen items.
“The island is the anchor for this kitchen,” said Carfield. “I needed it to be long enough to bridge the gap between the kitchen and the bar on the far end.”
Items like affordable but quality appliances and the subway tile backsplash helped save on the budget.
Carfield splurged on the cabinetry and countertops to create a neutral palette the clients could build on.
“Overall, I was thrilled with the way this entire project turned out. My clients were an absolute joy to work with,” said Carfield.
