A couple who renovated their home just 10 years ago found themselves in a dilemma. Their previous redesign had been very on-trend at the time, meaning that the style had aged considerably since then. Designer Kate Lester of Kate Lester Interiors was brought in to ensure they would not have to remodel again anytime soon.
“My main focus was to eliminate anything that was unnecessary and streamline and simplify,” said Lester. “We threw around names like ‘Spanifornia’ and ‘Modern French Chateau.”
According to Lester, a fresh coat of white paint throughout was their saving grace. This balanced white breathed new life into the home and allowed the furnishings, rugs and vintage art and accessories to stand out.
In the master bath, Lester decided to keep the color palette simple and use a classic black, white and gray-patterned marble on the floor as the room’s “wow” factor.
“To prevent the space from feeling too ‘matchy’ – which is a cardinal sin at our office – an infusion of bleached oak was added via the vanity and makeup area,” said Lester. “This warms the space and provides a depth and dimension that isn’t always present in a bathroom of this size.”
“The challenge in this space was that our clients had done that extensive remodel and had been really concerned with what was on-trend back then,” said the designer. “I knew this, so my biggest challenge was to design a concept that felt fresh and unique but also timeless.”
The patterned marble flooring contrasts the bleach oak vanity and matte-black hardware for a fresh appeal.
