This home on the coast of British Columbia had a fantastic ocean view kitchen going for it, but the original outdated space was blocking the view and making the home feel dark instead of open and airy. Designer Gwynite van Tuyl Weswick of Emerge Design in Sechelt, British Columbia, turned this space around – literally – to take in the sights and offer the homeowners more functionality.
Before the redesign, the kitchen felt cramped and did not make full use of its available space.
The kitchen was stretched into a formerly rarely used area and flipped to the interior wall so that the exterior wall could become a wall of windows.
“The island design allows the chef to enjoy the view and their company, providing guests the ability to be seated comfortably and immerse themselves in the kitchen’s hustle and bustle,” said van Tuyl Weswick. “The island design features a large central space to ensure food prep, conversation and appetizers take place harmoniously.”
The gray-blue backsplash offers a pop of subtle color in this otherwise white ocean view kitchen.
The wall between the dining room and living area was taken down and the wall of windows extended for an open floor plan.
The new design is open to the views outside while offering a more functional floor plan for multiple cooks to work in the kitchen simultaneously.
