The Modern Farmhouse
The homeowners in the Loomis, Calif.-based ranch home wanted the remodeled and expanded house to fit a large family. Renovated by San Diego-based designer Jules Wilson, it needed to transform into a modern, family-friendly farmhouse.
“We had to work with the existing, exposed vaulted ceiling,” said Wilson. “We loved the look and were happy to maintain what was existing, but we added and shifted some lighting, kept the main beams in their original natural finish and painted the tongue and groove in between to keep it feeling light and open.”
Cabinets were painted white along the perimeter for a fresh look, and a soft gray on the island was added for contrast.
“We were lucky to be heavily involved with the layout of the home, so the spaces function well together,” said Wilson.
This outdoor kitchen takes advantage of the surrounding landscape and the temperate California weather.
The master bathroom combines dark his-and-hers vanities with warm wood flooring and a freestanding tub as the centerpiece.
“We enjoyed working on the entire design overall, but we particularly enjoyed working with the patterned concrete tiles in both the guest bath and pool house bath,” said Wilson. “Choosing brightly colored and patterned tile is such a fun process, and we chose finishes that have a personality of their own.”
