Starting with a blank lot, Seattle-based SHED Architecture and Design worked to create an environmentally friendly and private home in one of the most populated neighborhoods in the city.
“Creating comfortable, private outdoor spaces with free-flowing connections to the kitchen and interior living areas was paramount in this project,” said principal designer Thomas Shaer.
To achieve the desired aesthetic and budget, the design team selected cabinets from Ikea and paired them with custom, eco-friendly bamboo cabinet fronts with recessed pulls.
The bamboo material was selected for its distinctive materiality and sets the tone for the rest of the house.
Other environmentally friendly additions include a high-efficiency boiler, in-floor radiant heating and Nest thermostats. Triple-pane windows protected by aluminum plate visors help control the temperature inside the home.
“The amount of light this house gets is quite impressive, considering we had to limit windows on the sides,” said Shaer.
