2019 Designs of the Year
KITCHEN OF THE YEAR
Designer: Shawna Dillon, Studio Snaidero DC Metro
The homeowners of a row home kitchen in the Old Town neighborhood of Alexandria, Va., enlisted the designer to increase efficiency and improve the way they functioned in the space.
KITCHEN OF THE YEAR
Open shelving brightens up the wall cabinets and provides storage for homeowners’ display items. Dillon chose shiplap for two of the walls as a nod to the port city where the clients live.
KITCHEN OF THE YEAR
One wall is home to the cooking appliances and refrigeration, along with vertical tray storage and three deep drawers for cookware. The opposite wall with coffee and wine stations also serves as secondary prep space with more storage solutions, including drawers and open shelving.
SECOND PLACE KITCHEN
Designer: Jason Landau, Amazing Spaces
For their new 656-sq.-ft. kitchen, the clients wanted to include a powder room, walk-in pantry and mudroom. They wanted the overall feel of the kitchen to include industrial and modern elements without looking cold, and their wish list included counter seating, a table for casual dining, a desk, a bar, multiple appliances and separate work zones for cooking and cleanup.
SECOND PLACE KITCHEN
The soffits provide two purposes: managing the cabinetry height and allowing for such design details as the grass cloth on the ceiling and oversized light fixtures.
HONORABLE MENTION: KITCHEN
Designer: Wendy Williams, Snaidero USA, Los Angeles Team
The Snaidero USA Los Angeles design team created a multi-functional kitchen that allows the homeowners to do a variety of things, including cooking, working and spending time with family and friends – with direct access to the pool and outdoor cooking area.
BATHROOM OF THE YEAR
Architects: Michael R. Poole & Nea May Poole, Poole & Poole
Nea May Poole and her husband Mike were searching for their forever home and decided to transform a Dutch gambrel-style barn that had been part of a large cattle farm. To preserve the original look of the hay barn, they decided to keep the original structural beams and columns, as well as an existing door and window openings, which presented a real design challenge.
BATHROOM OF THE YEAR
A floor-to-ceiling wall of blue quartzite with a cantilevered shelf provides the backdrop for the elegant vessel tub – a must for the lady of the house. Surrounding the tub are the fireplace, the coffee station and the TV.
BATHROOM OF THE YEAR
The vessel tub is able to retain the water’s heat, and it also provides lumbar support.
SECOND PLACE BATHROOM
Designer: Dvira Ovadia, Dvira Interiors
A couple in Toronto wanted a bright and spacious bath with a design that tied to the rest of the home – contemporary without feeling too modern or traditional. Their wish list included a soaker tub, a luxurious shower, a vanity that would accommodate two people comfortably and a private water closet.
SECOND PLACE BATHROOM
The client wanted to ensure that the space would be incredibly bright, and the reflection of the window in this edge-to-edge mirror fulfills this requirement.
SHOWROOM OF THE YEAR
Designer: Brandy Cohen (senior designer) and Erika Klimenko (director of projects), 210 Design
The design team members of 210 Design faced the challenge of renovating more than 8,000 square feet of its Snaidero and Plain and Fancy Cabinet lines, as well as furnishings and closet solutions from MisuraEmme. The new space includes three floors to display cabinet lines, and a basement level offers meeting space and some smaller kitchen and bath vignettes.
SHOWROOM OF THE YEAR
According to the designers, the main objective of this project was to create a destination that is accessible to everyone and features beautiful, functional, high-end cabinetry and finishes in an approachable and warm environment.
SHOWROOM OF THE YEAR
To recognize the building’s historical significance, original elements like beams, exposed brick, timber columns and an old elevator mechanism were incorporated into the design.
SECOND PLACE SHOWROOM
Designer: The Signature Kitchen Suite Experience & Design Center Team
To help launch its new luxury brand – Signature Kitchen Suite – LG Electronics created a showroom with more than 200 appliances and 21 vignettes. The Signature Kitchen Suite Experience & Design Center team worked to outfit this location to appeal to culinary enthusiasts.
SECOND PLACE SHOWROOM
The Signature Kitchen Suite Experience & Design Center was sustainably designed with efficient LG commercial air conditioning and LG LED lighting systems and appliances – most of which are ENERGY STAR certified. The facility is 100-percent powered by renewable energy and is carbon neutral certified.
BEST BALANCED BUDGET
Designer: Heather Mauldin, Heather Mauldin Interiors
After a larger remodel in another area of their house, a couple in Tampa, Fla., didn’t want to overstep the budget for the guest bath, which needed a much bigger statement. Heather Mauldin, principal designer at Heather Mauldin Interiors, managed to stay within the $16,000 budget with some creative juggling.
BEST BALANCED BUDGET
The terra cotta flooring was the most expensive part of the project, but it was a must-have for the homeowners, so they increased their budget slightly to make it work.
BEST USE OF COLOR
Designer: Paul Bentham, Lauren Levant Interior
Owners of a historic home were looking to add some drama and character to their kitchen – a space for the busy family to gather and also entertain guests. The clients allowed Paul Bentham, head designer of Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Lauren Levant Interior, to go a little moodier than the average white finish.
BEST USE OF COLOR
Undercabinet lighting allows the metallic glazed backsplash and black and white quartz countertops to shine.
BEST USE OF COLOR: HONORABLE MENTION
Designer: Alfred Zuno, SieMatic Möbelwerke, USA
According to Zuno, this blue tone intensifies as the day progresses and sunlight streams in from the many windows and the skylight. The night sky also complements the cabinetry and well-lit appliances, radiating a soft, rich feel throughout the room.
