Ceramics of Italy Announces 2016 Tile Competition Winners
RESIDENTIAL WINNER
Designer: Washington, D.C.-based Shinberg.Levinas Architects
“Our goal was to create large, open spaces linking the interior and exterior of the residence with modern feelings without being cold and produce a contrasting experience between dark bathroom interiors and warm living spaces.” – designer Salo Levinas
RESIDENTIAL WINNER
Designer: Washington, D.C.-based Shinberg.Levinas Architects
“The challenge was to work with an existing structure in an apartment that was occupied. We had to work in phases and demolish several walls to create continuity and reinforce the natural flow between rooms.” – designer Salo Levinas
RESIDENTIAL WINNER
Designer: Washington, D.C.-based Shinberg.Levinas Architects
“Turnberry Residence stands out because it gives a good relation between inside and outside. It keeps the warmth of a home, focuses the interior toward the panoramic views, and it is a functional and comfortable living space.” – designer Salo Levinas
Residential Honorable Mention
Firm: Toronto, Ontario-based DUBBELDAM Architecture + Design
“The house was situated on a narrow lot in a dense downtown neighborhood, so it was a challenge to ‘expand’ the interior space without increasing the footprint of the house. We solved this by rethinking the traditional home layout, utilizing built-in-place elements and changes in ceiling heights to define spaces rather than walls – and by creating a powerful visual connection with the backyard to extend the living space.” – designer Heather Dubbeldam
Residential Honorable Mention
Firm: Toronto, Ontario-based DUBBELDAM Architecture + Design
“Materials and built-ins were designed to emphasize linearity. This is especially evident in the kitchen and dining room, which are combined at the center of the house to preserve sightlines from the front of the house throughout the space.” – designer Heather Dubbeldam
Residential Honorable Mention
Firm: Toronto, Ontario-based DUBBELDAM Architecture + Design
“A linear marble-clad island is connected to the wood dining room table, allowing for both cooking and entertaining at once, and it is here that the clients now spend most of their time. The kitchen cabinets and stone countertop extend past the dining room to the exterior, morphing into a built-in BBQ.” – designer Heather Dubbeldam
Residential Honorable Mention
Firm: Toronto, Ontario-based DUBBELDAM Architecture + Design
“The kitchen is open to the main living space but is designed to ‘disappear’ and be fully integrated into the open space. The only clues that it is a kitchen are the sink and cooktop – visible in the space. The long marble kitchen island has a recessed linear gas cooktop that is sleek but highly functional. The rest of the appliances are fully concealed.” – designer Heather Dubbeldam
Residential Honorable Mention
Firm: New York, N.Y.-based Geoffrey A. Blatt Interior Design & Decoration
“I wanted to create an unusual outdoor terrace; not the standard bluestone used so often in the area. I wanted to create a light-hearted, fun terrace; bluestone often feels heavy and serious to me.” – designer Geoffrey Blatt
