In this Chicago condo, the views of Lake Michigan were completely disregarded in the original floor plan. Designer Liz Reifschneider of Hinsdale, Ill.-based Normandy Remodeling worked to embrace the windows in the new kitchen.

“We had to remove three walls of the kitchen,” said Reifschneider of the original layout. “This meant we had to put all of the tall storage on the one remaining wall.”

The dark walnut cabinetry has a smoke gray wash for a calming appeal.

The only place for the cooktop was on the island, but since the client did not want it to be visible, part of the original wall blocks the cooktop from sight in the living area. This hides any mess left while entertaining.

White quartz countertops were chosen to contrast the dark cabinetry.

“The vanity is pretty simple; we wanted the warm tones of the walnut to contrast against the crispness of the white to create a spa-like space,” said the designer.

Removing the wall between the tub and shower made the shower space feel much larger and more luxurious.
