The NKBA’s 2020 Professional Design Competition was clear evidence that the all-white kitchen and bath could have seen their heyday come and gone. While most designers agree that there will always be a place for classic white and sophisticated gray spaces, the winners in this year’s tilt incorporated numerous colors, metals, a forest full of wood tones, sculptural elements and textural accents to add dramatic interest to their designs. Open plans and maximized storage, often cleverly hidden, were paramount in most of the projects.

The winners were revealed at the Kitchen & Bath Design Competition + Industry Awards ceremonies at KBIS 2020 in Las Vegas on Jan. 20.

Kitchen and bath categories featured first, second and third places in traditional and contemporary styles, in sizes large (kitchens of 250 square feet or more; baths of 55 square feet or more) or small (kitchens under 250 square feet, baths under 55 square feet). First-place winners took home $3,000; second place was awarded $2,000, and third place earned $1,000. In addition, there were three specialty winners for Best Outdoor Kitchen, Design for Living in Place and the Clay Lyon Builder/Remodeler Award for a submission from a builder or remodeler.

Grand prizes of $10,000 each were awarded to winners of best overall kitchen and best overall bath, selected from among  the first-place winners in the kitchen and bath categories. These designers also earned a feature in Luxe Interior + Design magazine and a portfolio review by an editor of Interior Design magazine. Both titles in the Sandow media portfolio.

Judges for the two-round competition included designers Cheryl Kees Clendenon; Peter Salerno, CMKBD; Rebekah Zaveloff, CKD; Richard Anuszkiewicz; Dawn DeLuca, AKBD, CLIPP, CAPS; Vicky Sanderson, editor of website “Around the House with Vicky Sanderson;” and DJ Carey, editor of Connecticut Cottages & Gardens.

CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN (Large): 1^st  place Lana Zepponi Meyers, AKBD, Kitchens Unlimited, Memphis; Tennessee Chapter

MODERN CONTRAST
Lana Zepponi Meyers designed this sleek, elegant kitchen for two cooks. The signature is the contrast between clean, white, high-gloss cabinetry and marble countertops and rich, grain-matched Mid-century style mahogany cabinets along a full wall, including integrated, paneled appliances. Deep (30-in.) countertops maximize prep space, and custom storage and special features abound.

LET IT FLOW
Sandra Diaz-Velasco opened a cramped, closed-off kitchen to integrate seamlessly with the living space. She designed a curved wall with a custom wood mosaic and a curved, floating countertop for an organic flow evocative of waves and used dramatic dark wood cabinetry to camouflage the appliances and take full advantage of a stunning ocean view.

Doing Double Duty
Sleek, expansive and green best describe Elma Gardner’s design for two chefs featuring two full workstations, integrated appliances, plenty of custom storage and an indoor garden that delivers fresh herbs. The home is LEED for Homes Platinum-certified and National Green Building Standard Emerald-certified; rough-hewn European oak cabinetry imparts a sophisticated organic element, and subtle green and yellow accents warm the neutral palette.

CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN (Small): 1^st place Svetlana Tryaskina, Estee Design, Toronto; Ontario/Canada Chapter

TEXTURE IN TORONTO
For a couple who moved from Bermuda to Toronto, Svetlana Tryaskina layered an array of materials, textures and colors to create an upscale, open-concept space with entertaining top-of-mind. She expanded the small island into a larger peninsula with more seating, storage and sophisticated lighting. Striking walnut cabinetry plays against a blue hand-glazed backsplash, evoking Bermuda’s blue waters.

SLEEK SLABS
Sandra Diaz-Velasco’s young bachelor client wanted a masculine, geometric and uncluttered design for his 1970s-era condo renovation. She delivered smooth surfaces, from the stone flooring, countertop and backsplashes to warm wood slab panels for cabinetry and sliding doors to conceal prep space, creating an edgy, sophisticated environment that’s all guy.

THE BLACK BOX
The kitchen in this large, loft-like home was centrally located, adjacent to the master bedroom and main living areas on either side. To separate the spaces, Nyla Free designed a large black box structure that includes pantry storage and fully integrated appliances. A burst of yellow on the island, which features sink and cooktop, keeps the space lively.

WORKING ALL THE ANGLES
A centerpiece of this winning design is modern chevron paneling on the appliance wall and bar that ties into the flooring and ceiling panel detail. A mix of classic details with contemporary twists pulls the design together, with ample custom storage solutions hidden in the warm gray cabinetry. It makes this the best overall kitchen, giving Sarah Robertson the top honor for the second consecutive year.

NEW SPACE, OLD CHARM
This new-construction home exudes Old World charm through Cindy Aplanalp Yates’ blend of classic materials and traditional details. These include the beadboard ceiling, rustic lanterns, tailored trims, hammered copper farmhouse sink and copper vent hood, with modern touches like custom storage and sleek appliances. The distinctive aqua cabinetry creates a serene atmosphere.

HISTORY LESSON
David Heide relocated the kitchen and added an all-glass breakfast room in this historic house, bathing the space in natural light. Respecting the home’s history, he used glass-front cabinetry, caramel-toned red birch woods, millwork reflecting other parts of the structure, custom leaded-glass transom details and custom-glazed pale green tile that echoes the green tones in the quartzite countertops.

PETITE PLEASURES
Custom details characterize Karen Swanson’s 120-sq.-ft. kitchen design. Leaded-glass inserts for upper wall cabinets relate to windows in the adjacent dining room, while vertically oriented picket tiles convey a cottage-style charm. The custom riveted hood is a focal point, and the soothing palette lends a sense of calm to the design.

Sarah Robertson packed a ton of custom storage into this compact space, accommodating a structural column in the island and keeping the vibe elegant yet fun. Colorful cement tiles inject pattern and whimsy, and brass fixtures and hardware strike a handsome contrast with the deep indigo cabinetry.

POWDER ROOM WOW
Michelle Miazga-Hall overcame structural challenges to give her clients serious “wow” factor in their full-home renovation. A dark gray concrete trough sink maximizes the narrow space.  A black floor and white toilet, black-and-white photos in custom black metal frames and soft gray walls are punctuated with a brass faucet, shelving and a custom brass and marble mosaic that serves as a dramatic backdrop to the sink.

Michelle Miazga-Hall sought spa-like elegance in her blend of classic and modern elements for a master en suite bathroom. ZEN DRAMA
Carly Nemtean’s serene design plays with contrasts to create a sophisticated master retreat. The dark porcelain floor tile contrasts with the large white tub and white-framed round and rectangular windows. Textured and grooved tiles cover the walls and are a focal point in the shower, while warm wood cabinetry surrounds the vanity to soften the space.

MARBLE MAJESTY
Jenny Madden created a his-and-hers oasis clad in white marble This includes customizable mosaic tile using the same shapes, pattern and stones in varying scale to create well-defined spaces for husband and wife. Madden used white glass, silver leaf paint and clear glass knobs to create a shimmering effect and even found a claw-foot tub for the 6-ft.-3-in.-tall husband.

ELEGANT ESCAPE
Bill Livingston expanded his clients’ cramped master bath, adding storage, a large walk-in shower, separate toilet room, freestanding soaker tub, separate vanities and make-up area and two entrances to avoid congestion. A calming gray and white palette, heated floors and a TV lend a spa-like luxury.

Dalit Dray blended modern and traditional aesthetics to transform a dark, claustrophobic bathroom into a warm, well-lit space. She used strategic mirror placement and millwork, deep cove lighting to simulate skylight effects, frosted glass to allow light to flow though the space and a neutral palette.

URBAN PUNCH
The focal point of this boy’s bathroom is the industrial grid shower enclosure, creating a sharp contrast with the white walls, tile and cabinetry. Dvira Ovadia used a classic brick tile pattern and black and gold hardware – especially fun fist-shaped gold knobs – to punctuate the space, adding to the industrial vibe.

Using a custom silk mural with bamboo, berries and birds, Dvira Ovadia created an oasis in this tight powder room that feels anything but cramped. A pedestal vanity is adorned with classic details and gold trimmings for an elegant, Old World feeling that’s still light and airy.

CLEAN LINES
Matthew Ferrarini removed walls to create a clean, clutter-free open plan and provided abundant storage to hide tools, small appliances and other necessities. He layered materials, paint colors and woods to warm the room, and a simple cabinet layout helps the eye move seamlessly through the space.

WITHIN REACH
For her first project featuring Living in Place design, Kendall Ansell redesigned the kitchen in the large Olympic Village condo to have wheelchair access to the sink, cooktop and counters, added pull-down accessories to the upper cabinets and used vinyl corner bumpers for safety – all while maintaining a clean, white, modern aesthetic that’s anything but institutional.
