Houzz Invites Students to Apply for Annual Scholarship Program

September 20, 2021

Houzz Inc. recently announced the call for entries for its annual Houzz Scholarship Program, which supports the next generation of residential renovation and design professionals. Launched in 2016, the Houzz Scholarship Program supports students studying at interior design, construction, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural engineering schools or skilled trade schools.

“We started the Houzz Scholarship Program five years ago to encourage more people to pursue careers in residential remodeling and design,” said Liza Hausman, vice president of industry marketing at Houzz. “This year’s student applicants provided insightful and inspiring perspectives on the future of our built environments. We wish them the best of luck in their studies and look forward to their contributions to our industry.”

The 2021 winners are:

  • Women in Architecture: Adero Brooks (studying architecture at the Savannah College of Art and Design)
  • Residential Design: Zoe Kulphongpatana (studying architecture at the University of Kansas)
  • Sustainable Residential Design: Brianna Banks-McLean (studying architecture at Yale University)
  • Residential Construction Management: Mitchell Doyle (studying construction management at Ferris State University)
  • Skilled Trades Residential Construction: Isabelle Toth (studying construction management at Roger Williams University)

According to Brooks, the Houzz Scholarship Program is a huge blessing to her and her family. She plans to continue her education and achieve a Master’s in architecture while simultaneously earning her license. She also wants to give back to her community by focusing on residential design that is good for families and good for the environment. She’s excited to work with people from different communities to continue to make the world a better place with each design collaboration.

“College is a big investment into my future, and this scholarship helps make that financial burden a little easier,” she added. “To receive a scholarship geared toward women in my field is to receive encouragement and validation as I continue on my path to architecture licensure.”

Kulphongpatana says that winning the Houzz Scholarship is a great honor because it means that her hard work has paid off, and it shows her that she is on the right path toward an impactful future.

“I plan to focus on my education and pursue academic and professional opportunities that will provide me with skills that will help me in my future professional career,” she added.

According to Doyle, the Houzz Scholarship Program is the reason he was able to continue his difficult academic journey. His plan is to complete his construction management degree and apply to work for a large general contractor or architecture firm in the Midwest.

“I am also pursuing LEED accreditation to help build my credibility,” he added. “Hopefully I can use my knowledge to give back and build infrastructure that surpasses expectations.”

The Houzz Scholarship Program supports the next generation of students studying architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, construction management or skilled trades. Applicants were evaluated by a panel based on the completion of their scholarship application and Houzz profile, career goals and a written essay.
