Cultivating Winning Teams

February 2, 2022

On our new From the Tap podcast, I welcomed Green Forest Cabinetry CEO, John Morgan, and his colleague, Emily McCullum, the company’s director of market/business development. We discussed how to cultivate winning teams for your business.

Among many other things, we covered the definition of winning team, how to attract and retain successful talent, necessary skills leaders need to create these teams and innovative ways to work around the labor shortage.

Morgan’s motto is “be the change agent rather than let change happen to you,” and he said he learned early on that if you surround yourself with great people and start building those successful teams, you can direct that change and start looking forward. He believes in each team member making the one next to them better than they are by themselves.

The dynamic at Green Forest Cabinetry isn’t all about business, it’s about having fun, too. Morgan says it’s the perfect blend of credibility and youthfulness. The company prides itself in hiring people with different perspectives, and McCullum says that Morgan has a knack for seeing things in people they may not have seen in themselves. He believes in leveraging each individual’s skill set to decide what position for which they are most suited.

Morgan shared some necessary skills leaders need to create winning teams, including putting in the same amount of work you expect from your employees. He also supports his team enough to be happy for them when they move on in their careers – even if that means being with a different team.

As far as the labor shortage, employees at Green Forest Cabinetry are cross trained for different skills. They are also empowered to make choices and decisions that will impact the company’s success, and it is isn’t all about being regimented from the top down.
