Doing What’s Really Best for Your Clients
August 19, 2021
This week’s “From the Tap” KBB podcast topic covers how a design pro is able to separate their own style or opinion when it comes time to renovate for a client. We talk about how they deal with letting their clients have a say and not design a space solely for themselves – among lots of other things.
Our guest is Morgan Molitor, who is the founder and creative director of Minnesota-based Construction2Style – a full-service residential remodeling firm. Her firm’s goal is to create a space that is a reflection of their clients, and she believes every space should have a story to tell.
She and her firm have a set of questions they ask to get into the nitty gritty of what their clients are looking for and where to spend the budget based on their needs. In the design process, Molitor always starts by addressing color, and although there are some shades she dislikes, she will work with them if her clients desire.
Molitor believes in being honest with her clients about what she does and doesn’t recommend. She has also encountered scenarios where she has had to put her foot down when her clients have gone rogue.
Although Contruction2Style definitely has a “style” the firm prefers (eclectic, fun, colorful) – and many of their clients actually seek them out because of this – they do feature a variety of projects and styles on their website and multiple blog posts.
The designer also has experience letting her clients know when they can be involved in the process and when it’s time to back off and let the pros do their job. After all, they hired a designer for a reason.
Molitor shares some of the steps they stopped taking as a result of the pandemic that have actually saved them time and money. She also weighs the pros and cons of edesign and talks about how you can price right for your services.
