BLANCO by Design Contest Winners Announced

February 19, 2018

German faucet and sink manufacturer BLANCO has released the names of the five winners in its first-annual BLANCO by Design contest. Entrants were required to submit a kitchen or small-space design featuring one BLANCO sink and one BLANCO faucet for a chance to win up to $5,000.

The BLANCO by Design contest was open until last November, and winners were recently hand-selected by a panel of design professionals. The five BLANCO by Design contest winners include: Fred Alsen of Chicago-based FMA Interior Design; Keslie Muhlenbruch of Marshall, Minn.-based Minnesota Cabinets; Cheryl Kees Clendenon of Pensacola, Fla.-based In Detail Interiors; Michele Alfano of Hudson Valley, N.Y.-based Michele Alfano Design; and Karen Kassen of Memphis, Tenn.-based Kitchens Unlimited.

Grand Prize
Fred Alsen, FMA Interior Design, Chicago
A kitchen built for entertaining, this design features a large island with bar seating and a wine fridge, as well as the BLANCO RONDO sink that doubles as both a prep area and storage for cold beverages. Modern wood cabinetry, rust-toned upholstery and white countertops complete the modern but warm space.

First Place Small Kitchen Space
Cheryl Kees Clendenon, In Detail Interiors, Pensacola, Fla.
Clendenon transformed a small space into a unique kitchen filled with bright and colorful elements. Included in this kitchen are floor-to-ceiling subway tiles, sunshine yellow open shelving and a BLANCO ONE sink with a coordinating Culina faucet.

First Place – Kitchen
Keslie Muhlenbruch, Minnesota Cabinets, Marshall, Minn.
Muhlenbruch designed an open-layout kitchen complete with a fresh, airy feel. Along with a black, apron-front sink and a subway tile backsplash, the designer chose a MERIDIAN faucet to bring her idea to life.

Honorable Mention
Michele Alfano, Michele Alfano Design, Hudson Valley, N.Y.
Alfano’s custom kitchen design is a modern farmhouse style with an open concept. According to the designer, her biggest challenge was the low existing ceiling heights in the home. Portals were created to define spaces while opening the kitchen, dining room and family room spaces so the client could play center stage at her island while cooking and entertaining. The stepped ceiling added depth, dimension and volume to the design.

Honorable Mention
Karen Kassen, Kitchens Unlimited, Memphis, Tenn.
Built for a traditional home with a contemporary and eclectic style, Kassen’s kitchen design combines modern elements with a colorful twist. This sleek kitchen includes integrated LED lighting, pop-up outlets and a herringbone-patterned backsplash in an array of colors.
