Touring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Designer Showhouse
March 9, 2020
Atlanta Magazine and Atlanta Magazine’s HOME recently partnered with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to present the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Designer Showhouse, which has opened to the public. Atlanta-based Harrison Design’s modern studio director, Robert Tretsch III, based the design of the home on an inspirational 1945 Atlanta Youth Symphony performance. The interiors were created by several prominent Atlanta-based designers. KBB toured the home to find out more about their designs.
KITCHEN: Matthew Quinn & Team, Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio
In the home’s kitchen, Matthew Quinn and his team blended style and function to create a cutting-edge space fit for a master chef. The designers placed the cooktop in front of a large bank of windows to give homeowners an expansive view of the outdoors. A massive island accommodates a large sink, lots of storage space and plenty of seating. Its marble countertop incorporates both wood and metal; the former is also used to define an informal eating area, and the latter complements the cabinetry hardware and the main faucet. Opposite the island, a ‘tall wall’ houses a refrigerator, two ovens, an appliance garage and a pantry.
LAUNDRY ROOMS + MUD ROOM: Dana Lynch, Dana Lynch Design
Style meets function in the home’s laundry rooms and mudroom, which were outfitted by Atlanta designer Dana Lynch. In the larger upstairs laundry, Lynch paired an understated palette with black-green cabinets and omitted the uppers in favor of an oak box shelf that wraps the corner of the room to provide a shot of contrast.
MASTER SUITE: William Peace, Peace Design
While designing the master suite, Peace imagined that the people who might live in the house would be well educated, well traveled and interested in architecture and design. To cater to this, he installed a wallcovering in the bathroom that evokes an antiqued mirror for an added vintage appeal. A freestanding bathtub is set against a large window overlooking the pool, where sheer drapery covers the windows for privacy.
UPSTAIRS BEDROOM #1 + BATH: Bradley Odom, Dixon Rye
Inspiration for this bathroom came from a recent trip to Antwerp, where Odom took note of the simplicity of Belgian design. As a result, his spaces are calm and serene, with texture rather than color taking center stage. In the adjoining bath, he continued the same aesthetic, with plaster-like walls and minimal accessories.
GAME ROOM + POOL BATH: Jill Mansfield & Bryan Kirkland, FiftyEight Interiors
In the game room, the design partners created a fun space with graphic elements and an organic feel. The adjoining bath creates an ultra-luxurious feel with a simple freestanding vanity, a black-and-white backsplash and gold elements like the slab used in the shower.
DOWNSTAIRS LOUNGE + POWDER ROOM: Michael Habachy, Habachy Designs
Inspiration for the lounge and bar area came from the Japanese Wabi-Sabi movement, which honors rustic simplicity and beauty in imperfection. Organic and earthy elements include a rough-textured stone bar and a hand-sewn fur rug. In the adjacent powder room, the designer continued the organic theme with burlap and mica-flecked wallcovering, a smoked mirror and rose-gold fixtures.
DOWNSTAIRS BEDROOM + BATH: Ili Hidalgo-Nilsson, Terracotta Design Build
Hidalgo-Nilsson took a decidedly different approach to the design of the first-floor guest suite. She divided her staff into groups and tasked them with producing a room concept based on certain parameters, resulting in a sophisticated guest retreat that feels cohesive and also represents the firm. In the adjoining bath, accessories are minimal so as not to compete with the bold and graphic tile used in the other room.
All proceeds from the showhouse go to benefit the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra performs more than 150 concerts per season, including educational and community concerts, for a combined audience of more than a quarter-million people.
