Embracing Children in Kitchen & Bath Design
April 13, 2022
On this week’s From the Tap Podcast, designer Malka Heft, founder of Think Chic Interiors, talked about how to design kitchens and baths with children of all ages in mind. She said 90% of her clients have young kids, and she has specific questions she asks to ensure she provides a successful project for everyone involved.
There are certain things to keep in mind when considering children in kitchen and bath design, including durable materials for wear and tear and that require minimal maintenance. In the kitchen, Heft also likes to incorporate pulldown shelves and undercounter drawers for things like snacks and fruit, as well as an instant hot faucet for filling baby bottles. She explained why she doesn’t opt for quartz countertops, as well as her go-to material, and shared tips for protecting the island from the kicking of kids’ shoes.
The designer likes children’s bathrooms to be as neutral as possible and adds color through things like towels and accessories. Her material of choice for bathroom flooring is porcelain, and she never specifies a high-gloss surface because it is a tripping hazard.
One of Heft’s favorite kitchen projects with kids in mind was done in primarily porcelain and other versatile and durable material. She also incorporated a hidden step stool.
