Cersaie 2022: Tile Trends and Takeaways

October 6, 2022

Cersaie 2022, the international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings held in Bologna, Italy, was bustling with exhibitors and attendees from around the globe. Over the expo’s five days of operation, more than 90,000 attendees were counted – an increase of about 50% over the 2021 fair. Among the standout trends we noted at Cersaie 2022:

  • 3D digital printing has improved impressively. Spot glazes are precisely applied and textured surfaces are more realistic than ever before
  • Porcelain slabs are bigger, lighter and stronger, facilitating both design and installation
  • Wood- and stone-look products are hyper-realistic, in both visual and tactile senses
  • Layered, translucent effects are in vogue. From distressed “wallpaper” to antiqued “frescoes” to smoky “onyx” tiles, this visual depth conveys the passage of time
  • Colors are muted and earthy. Across the spectrum, dusky hues dominate
  • Fantastical botanical motifs – often on a very large scale – bring the jungle and the garden indoors
  • Subway tiles small and large are finding new life when installed on the vertical
  • Deeply ridged surfaces are giving dimension to ceramic tiles
  • Oxidized metal-looks are an industrial-influenced complement to the vast selection of elaborate mineral-look products
