Varaluz Jacob’s Ladder
August 17, 2023
Inspired by the flowering plant of the same name, Jacob’s Ladder by Varaluz rises to meet even the most discerning design tastes. An identifying feature of this plant, which was featured in the painting by Mary Vaux Walcott found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, is its foliage, with its densely packed leaf stems that bear small, fern-like leaflets, that rise along the stem. The Jacob’s Ladder collection similarly features a stunning handwoven, alternating, natural, sustainable rattan and abaca rope layering. In a dark room, the backlighting on the rope has a starry night, twinkle effect. Handcrafted from 70% recycled steel, the fixture features a low-VOC French gold finish.
The new collection is part of Varaluz’s expansion of Smithsonian Illuminated, its collaboration in lighting with the Smithsonian Institution, including three new families and one extension to existing collections. Honoring this partnership, Varaluz relies on the institution’s vast collections of objects, photographs and materials for inspiration.
