Patterson Flynn Mary McDonald Collection

January 12, 2023

Mary McDonald has released a new collection for Patterson Flynn. For this collection, McDonald drew inspiration from Directoire and Empire styles, homing in on emblems from the decorative periods before and during Napoleon’s reign. Patterns include Masquerade, Polestar and Compass.

Masquerade is inspired by the simplicity and possibilities within a pinwheel pattern that vary depending on its coloration and scale. Showing the design in a range of aqua softens its contemporary nature, and colorways include taupe, natural, blush and aqua.

Polestar (pictured) is a compilation of some of  McDonald’s favorite marble floors in important castles and homes in Europe, translated to a more casual rug. Drawn to stars, sunbursts, diamond patterns and layers of pattern, the designer created this rug based on parts and pieces she loves from the Empire period during the reign of Napoleon. Colorways include natural/black, sky/brown and oyster.

Compass is based on the common Directoire period X pattern seen in grates, fences and furniture with a central compass star, which has continued to be used throughout many design periods. The clean banding offers a simple nod to a Greek Key, and the design pairs many additional elements while harking back to the decorative period during Napoleon’s reign. Compass is available in natural/black and blue colorways.
