The creative team at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Studio 818 Design + Build Management looked west to Palm Springs, Calif., and its trove of mid-century modern homes, to be exact – for design inspiration in this new-build spec project. Committed to developing a home based on mid-century modern architectural principles, they found that the open floor plan – where the kitchen, living and dining areas flow into one another – presented challenges to the design of the kitchen.

To clarify the visual transition among the three spaces, Studio 818 principals Janie Micek and Jean-Paul Micek designed a carefully orchestrated bank of custom cabinetry to extend along the wall from the kitchen into the dining area. Progressing in modules of scale and material – from a tiled backsplash and plaster wall to a small, solid-front hanging cupboard to a floor-to-clerestory, glassed-in sideboard and shelves unit – the different cabinet treatments define the spaces without intruding on the openness of the plan.

Color and Materials Reinforce Spatial Identities

“In the kitchen, the primary cabinet color scheme – forest green-painted doors with natural wood interiors – was paired with the island’s leathered-finish black marble,” said Janie. “We used this bold approach to create a bridge between contemporary and mid-century modern aesthetics while playing against the raw nature of the concrete floors.”

About those floors: Studio 818 devised an updated twist on terrazzo that pays homage to the flooring often used in South Florida mid-century modern homes.

“We specified a small-aggregate concrete blend,” said Jean-Paul. “After the floor was poured and set, it was ground smooth and polished to expose the aggregate particles. The neutral color and finish of the floor allows the key structural elements, surface materials and cabinetry of the home to really pop.”
