In order to create this modern, open kitchen for his empty-nester clients—and remain within its existing footprint so as not to disturb their beloved year-round garden—Jonas Carnemark, cr, ckd, owner and founder of CARNEMARK systems+design, inc., looked inside to maximize every available inch of the 240-sq.-ft. room. First he tackled the ceiling, replacing “clunky, exposed soffits” with flush, steel L-beams, which “required some skilled construction calisthenics,” he said, but resulted in a smooth ceiling and additional height, instantly making the kitchen feel more open. This made way for basalt and glass wall cabinets, a sleek stainless hood and floating shelves, as well as coordinating perimeter cabinets in beech and expansive gray countertops for a streamlined appeal. Adding to the warm palette, Carnemark chose a wooden table (joined to the prep island) for casual dining and heated, large-format porcelain floor tiles in an earthy grayish-amber. Thanks to the addition of a third window, the clients can admire their garden from what is now, one imagines, their favorite room in the house.
