Tile is Trending for 2023

January 2, 2023

As tile design trends have evolved in the past year or so, we’d like to acknowledge the role played by educated consumers. Often seeking ways to bring a resi-mercial look to their homes, they are being thoughtful with material choices throughout.

Here’s a summary of the tile trends we observed through 2022, and a look at what 2023 may hold.

Green as a neutral. From bathroom subway floor patterns in monochromatic, muted greens to a classic herringbone pattern permeated with a craftsman patina to the ultimate integration of botanical greens behind the stove in an eye-catching pattern, we’re seeing green used abundantly throughout kitchens and baths.

Color is increasingly used as a strategic design element; previously, it was presented as a small visual splurge. In 2022, green led the way by serving as a neutral pulling several material types together, creating cohesive and beautiful spaces. In a vast array of hues, it has become a timeless color, maintaining value in residential interiors.

Classics remain strong. In 2022, we saw a charcoal and black herringbone layout that used mixed finishes – gloss nestled right next to satin – which really amplified the installation as light conditions shift. Consumers are specifically seeking varied applications of color that come from artisanal glaze application. The added dimension amplifies the visual interest clients want, without too much fuss. This type of juxtaposition, using the same color palette while changing the pattern, saw a spike in kitchen applications – often on the wall behind the stove – where clients are looking for a visual landing space.

Subway tiles are having a resurgence, with designers using the classic rectangle in fresh patterns. We’re regularly seeing vertical stacks of this timeless format, often using smaller-size tile.

tile trends

Looking ahead to 2023, tile continues to be elevated from simply a building material to statement maker. Creative, sophisticated consumers will continue to invest in and use tile as art. Craftsmanship and sustainability will again be key selling points.

Stylistically, we’re anticipating pastels, warm hues and mid-century inspired looks in tile. We expect to see emerald taking a strong position as the most requested tone in the green tile family. Working from inspiration versus utility-only, tile will show up in moody and earthy applications. Our consumer is educated and making decisions to direct their dollars to work smarter by solving design puzzles that address aesthetic, functional and environmental issues.
