This Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, home started with a traditional design, but the modern-leaning homeowners wanted an update. Los Angeles-based designer Sandy Espinet stepped in to create a family environment better suited to their preferences.

After walls were knocked down, the long space was broken up with two different types of cabinetry: wood grain and eggshell lacquer.

The kitchen now has a great room feel with an office at one end, an island in the center and an outdoor patio on the other end.

Near the ovens, a small office area allows the home cook to multitask while in the kitchen or the children to do homework near their parents.

“My client and I were shopping, and we both fell in love with the textured handmade John Pomp Studio pendants,” said Espinet of the light fixtures above the island. “They glisten and give off beautiful light and also give a warm touch to the kitchen.”

The blue teal wall behind a television screen reflects the color of the ocean outside and faces the barstool part of the island, where the family can watch TV together.

“The master bedroom and the outside areas were key in this home and turned out spectacular,” said Espinet. “They all have the same colors as the kitchen, and the house is unified through art and color. It was a great project and a great client to work with.”
