Lighting Design Insights from David Trubridge

February 21, 2024

We recently spoke with David Trubridge, founder of David Trubridge Lighting in Hastings, New Zealand. He shared his thoughts about some of the compelling concepts in lighting, from both aesthetic and functional perspectives in our latest From the Tap podcast.

The conversation starts by exploring about what drew Trubridge to his chosen field. From his childhood interest in geometry through his experience as a Jamaica-based furniture designer to a teacher in Australia, he traces his development as an artist.

Next, we review the diverse effects of light and light fixtures on people, outlining its physical, psychological and physiological impact on them. Trubridge discusses circadian lighting in detail.

The conversation then focuses on specific examples of effective illumination for the bathroom and the kitchen. The how and why to layer light in these rooms receives special attention.

The talk wraps up with Trubridge reflecting on the recent advancements and emerging trends that excite him the most, and how he sees them impacting residential lighting design. He speaks passionately about the sustainability issues, including the need to reduce or eliminate red-listed chemicals and materials that are commonly used in the manufacture of fixtures.
