NKBA Southern New England Chapter Presents Donation to FISH

August 15, 2018

On August 2, 2018, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Southern New England Chapter presented its first in a series of semi-annual donations to FISH of Greater New Haven to assist in providing free grocery delivery assistance to the growing number of households with families who are homebound in the Greater New Haven area. The gift will allow FISH to purchase and deliver free bags of nutritionally sound groceries.

Through the $548 donation, FISH would be able deliver two weeks’ worth of groceries to over 75 homebound individuals in the New Haven area. FISH has actively worked with the New Haven community because of its strong residential base and because of the harsh impact residents of this community have endured due to economic and social disparities.

New Haven has the largest amount of food insecure residents in the state of Connecticut at 22 percent compared to the state rate of 12 percent and the national rate of 13 percent. In the city of New Haven’s lowest income neighborhoods, food insecurity impacts one in three adults. Government programs like SNAP and WIC help the food insecure population in New Haven but do not completely resolve the issue. This is where community-based programs like FISH help to provide food to hungry families when government programs are not enough.

“We are very excited to present this donation to FISH, a local organization that is helping the New Haven community on a daily basis, and to partner with them as they provide food and outreach to some of the most vulnerable households in the area,” said Karen Warner, president of the NKBA Southern New England Chapter. “Our commitment to provide donations to FISH is ongoing, and our members are proud to help empower them to be even greater agents of change within the community.”

The NKBA Southern New England Chapter established the Community Involvement Committee in 2017 to develop ways for members to give back to their community and has chosen FISH as the charity it will support in 2018 and 2019 because of its commitment to making meaningful, positive and sustainable change within New Haven’s neighborhoods and communities.
